Daniel Dubois Splits With Mark Tibbs, Hires Shane McGuigan

Boxing Scene

In a surprise move, heavyweight contender Daniel Dubois has split with trainer Mark Tibbs.

In the aftermath of suffering his first career loss at the hands of Joe Joyce in 2020, Dubois decided to split with coach Martin Bowers and began the hunt for a new trainer.

He eventually hired Tibbs back in February.

They were scheduled to work together for the first time on June 5, when Dubois would step in the ring with veteran Bogan Dinu.

But the 23-year-old Dubois has now parted ways with Tibbs and hired a new head trainer in Shane McGuigan, according to The Daily Mail.

The paper indicates that Dubois decided to hire a new trainer after Tibbs informed the boxer’s team that he has other commitments.

Tibbs suffered a big setback last week, when his fighter Billy Joe Saunders was stopped in eight rounds by Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in their three belt super middleweight unification at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

McGuigan, while relatively young at 33-years-old, has guided Carl Frampton, George Groves, Josh Taylor and Lawrence Okolie to world titles.

Dubois (15-1, 14 KOs) is looking to rebuild his credibility in the weight class after the stunning defeat to Joyce.

He was ahead on two official cards, when a fractured orbital bone forced him to take a voluntary knee in the tenth round – and the referee counted him out.

While Dubois underwent surgery and needed months of healing, many fans felt he ‘quit’ in the contest.

Dubois suffered the injury a few rounds earlier and the eye was nearly swelled shut when Joyce landed another hard shot in the affected area. At that point, Dubois explained that his vision went dark. In order to prevent permanent damage he decided to take a knee.
