Canelo trounces Charlo to retain undisputed title

Canelo Alvarez cruised to a one-sided decision over Jermell Charlo to remain the undisputed super middleweight champion Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Alvarez dominated the action from start to finish, including in Round 7, when he floored Charlo with an overhand right hand followed by a grazing right uppercut.

The judges scored it 119-108, 118-109 and 118-109 for Alvarez, who became the first male boxer with three defenses of an undisputed title in the four-belt era.

“This Canelo — nobody can beat this Canelo,” Alvarez said in his postfight interview on Showtime. “I love boxing so f—ing much. Boxing is my life.”

Saturday’s fight marked the first between two male undisputed champions in the four-belt era. Charlo is the undisputed junior middleweight champion.

Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs), ESPN’s No. 4 pound-for-pound boxer, defeated John Ryder by unanimous decision in his previous fight in May. He began his undisputed reign of the 168-pound division when he added Caleb Plant’s IBF title to his WBC, IBF and WBO belts in November 2021.

Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) was attempting to join Claressa Shields and Terence Crawford as the only boxers (male or female) with undisputed titles in two or more weight classes in the four-belt era. He moved up 14 pounds to face Alvarez and fought above 154 pounds for the first time.

“I feel like it wasn’t me in there,” Charlo said. “I don’t make excuses. You win some, you lose some. I’m undisputed in my weight. I was daring to be great. I’m proud of myself.”
