Canelo wants to prove he’s better than Bivol

CANELO Alvarez has reiterated his desire and need to face Dmitry Bivol in a rematch later this year.

The TBRB Super Middleweight champion was bested by the Russian comfortably over 12 rounds at light-heavyweight just under one year ago.

Bivol went on to add to his undefeated ledger by beating Gilberto Ramirez while Canelo defended his place as the number one super middleweight with a win over old rival Gennadiy Golovkin in their third bout.

On Saturday, May 6 the Mexican superstar returns to Guadalajara for his first fight at home since beating Kermit Cintron at 154lbs in 2011. This time Britain’s John Ryder is the underdog tasked with causing one of the biggest shocks in the modern era.

Canelo was a recent guest on the Big Fight Weekend podcast hosted by Dan Rafael and explained why he is keen to face Bivol once again.

“That’s my goal. Everybody knows that’s my goal. In the same weight class (light-heavyweight), the same place, everything the same.”

The 32-year-old was asked why he wanted the rematch so much.

“Because of what I know. I know I wasn’t 100% with that fight. Because I know I’m better than him.”

Without seemingly wanting to use it as an excuse there was the question of his wrist injury which Canelo believes did hinder him against Bivol.

“Yeah, and plus, I have four fights in 11 months, my hand get worse, really bad. As a fighter I say it’s fine, one more fight. I was not able to train 100%. That’s why I need to prove I’m better than him.”
