Fundora expected to defend title against Cruz, Jan. 27

Fighting

Women’s IBF flyweight champion Gabriela Fundora is currently in the works to make her first world title defense against Christina Cruz next month, according to ESPN’s sources. They state that Fundora will put her belt on the line on January 27 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona, appearing on the Jaime Munguia vs John Ryder undercard.

Fundora (12-0, 5 KOs) won the IBF strap just a couple of months ago, stopping Arely Mucino in five rounds of domination. Fundora had since been expected to unify titles with Marlen Esparza, but it seems that fight isn’t in the cards for the immediate future.

Meanwhile Cruz (6-0) has won three low level fights this year, which at least provides her with the activity level that should have her about as prepared as she’s going to be. That said, she’s 41 years old with six professional fights, so I’m not expecting much improvement out of her at this stage.
