Gervonta Davis On Hector Luis Garcia And Ryan Garcia: “I Don’t Think Either One Of Them Is A Complete Fighter”

Boxing Scene

As most of boxing’s biggest stars are attempting to figure out their 2023 schedule, Gervonta Davis has already lined up the first half of his calendar.

First up for the soft-spoken power puncher out of Baltimore, Maryland, will be a showdown against the streaking Hector Luis Garcia (16-0, 10 KOs) on January 7th. Of course, following a banner year, one that included victories over Chris Colbert and Roger Gutierrez, Hector is chomping at the bit.

Should things go according to plan, Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) will then square off against Ryan Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) at some point in April. As the newly turned 28-year-old examines both Garcia’s, he’s come to the conclusion that neither man has the total package.

“I don’t think either one of them is a complete fighter,” said Davis to a group of reporters.

Regardless of his bravado, Davis is working tirelessly behind closed doors as he prepares himself for battle. In the case of Ryan, the 24-year-old had seemingly left behind the 135-pound division for good. Yet, even after ending the night of Javier Fortuna in the sixth round earlier this year in his super lightweight debut, Ryan has decided to move back down in weight as his showdown against Davis will take place at a catchweight of 136 pounds.

While he’s confident in his ability to leave his opponents face down on the canvas, Davis isn’t going into either bout overly anxious or filled with hubris. Considering that both Garcia’s sport undefeated records and bring a bevy of dangerous skills to the table, Davis knows good and well that it will take much more than his vaunted left hand to get the job done.

“I can’t just go in there and try to knock either opponent out. It’s more than just punching power, it’s skills along with boxing IQ.”
