Heredia Expects Casimero To Have Best Camp Ever For Rigondeaux Fight

Boxing Scene

A few weeks ago, Showtime announced their fall schedule which includes a bantamweight showdown pitting WBO bantamweight champion John Riel Casimero (30-4) against WBA ‘regular’ bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (20-1). The fight will take place on August 14th and should be an interesting contrast in styles.

The 32-year-old Casimero is expected to hit Las Vegas for his training camp in early June.  He will be entering his third camp with world class strength and conditioning coach Angel “Memo” Heredia who also works with Jean Pascal, Yordenis Ugas, and several other prominent fighters.

Heredia expects this camp to be the best that he has had with Casimero because of their familiarity with each other.

“This will be our third camp which means I will be able to add more exercises, more weight lifting training and more specific drills. Sometimes when a boxer does not have any background in conditioning and you add exercises right away – they can’t do them because they have never done them before.  Now that this is our third camp that means that he is used to my work and he knows what it takes to complete the training sessions and he knows what he has to feel to get true benefits from conditioning,” Heredia told BoxingScene.com.

Casimero enters the fight on a six-fight win streak with a third round knockout of former champion Zolani Tete as his signature win during the run.

Heredia said that the Filipino is a very disciplined fighter and now truly understands the benefits of working with a strength and conditioning coach.

“We do this with different steps. In the beginning he couldn’t understand the difference between sprinting and running or jogging in the mountains or running on flat land. Now it will be a more complete training camp and I believe it will be our best camp ever,” Heredia explained.

Rigondeaux has won three fights in a row with his most recent taking place in February 2020, when he defeated Liborio Solis via split decision.
