The World Boxing Council (WBC) granted the representatives of boxers Julio Cesar Martinez and McWilliams Arroyo additional time to negotiate the details so that a fight between them can take place.
Arroyo filed a petition with the WBC to declare him a proprietary 112-pound champion because Martinez pulled out of their bout that was scheduled for June 26. Martinez claims to have suffered food poisoning after consuming salmon.
It was Martinez’s third withdrawal for various reasons.
However, the WBC indicated as an alternative that Arroyo and Martínez agree on a new date for the fight.
“We are working with the people of Matchroom Boxing and Golden Boy Promotions to find space on a card with a guarantee for Arroyo. Benefits will be required because mistakes are paid for with money,” said Bryan Pérez, of Miguel Cotto Promotions, to Carlos Gonzalez.
In August 2020, Martínez indicated that he had a respiratory infection and, therefore, it was necessary to postpone the fight. Then in February 2021, the Mexican fighter injured his hand just days before the official weigh-in.
Instead of rescheduling the fight with Arroyo, Martinez opted to move up a notch to challenge Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez. He was not successful.
“We are looking for a space and the best benefits for McWilliams. There is no date yet. It is up in the air, but we hope they will tell us if they agree or not,” said Pérez.
Last November Martínez and Arroyo met face to face inside the ring, but the fight was declared ‘no contest’ due to a head clash in the third round that caused an injury to the Puerto Rican boxer and he was unable to continue in the fight.
